Portuguese phrase bookIt was of little help, I found more helpful the language section of a Rough Portugal travel guide.
Phrase book loverExcellent phrase book, everything is in the right place and easy to locate, not a bad size dictionary either. I shall be looking to purchase the BBC phrase books in French & Spanish.
Small, back-pocket sized Portuguese Phrase Book should be a BIG helpWith M's that run through the nose like a french "N" and S's that slither out like a shower of rain, Portuguese looks a daunting language to take on, if all you had before was school French. This little book however is not a haphazard collection of "Useful" phrases, it makes a stab at providing the basics of the language itself. Colour coded sections allow you to quickly thumb through to the right group of phrases for most situations - from finding your way to booking a room or hiring a vehicle -not just shopping or eating out, but chatting up the locals (with handy grammar tips to make sure you speak to the right sex) - and the grammar section sticks to these essentials too. Finally there is a pretty comprehensive Dictionary of about 2500 words in both English and Portuguese with the addition of a sort of phonetic pronunciation of each word. Perhaps the only fault is the use of pale blue for Portuguese and Black for English. In certain lighting conditions this might cause problems - maybe an olive green or a maroon colour would have been better than the insipid blue. Mind, the Phonetic pronunciation element IS in black - but this pronunciation element is not duplicated in the Portuguese to English section. Have a look at the back cover -this book does exactly what it claims to do. At its publishers price it would be a bargain; at AMAZON price? buy it even if you are going on a cruise and will only stop off at Funchal for one day!!!
Cant Fault It!Excellent size to carry around. Packed with everything the beginner to the language could need. Comprehensive phonetics to get the pronunciation right. Quick A-Z dictionary at the back for easy reference for both english words and their portuguese equivalent and viceversa. Very good little book that is amazing value for money.
Eu achei que era fantastico!!!
Can't go wrong!Holds the balance between simplicity and and bit more detail for those who want it. Useful pronunciation guide (although sometimes confusing due to the way it chooses to convey sounds using "English" equivalents which themselves could be read more than one way, due to the vagaries of our language!) Apart from this, well laid out, with a good choice of day-to-day vocabulary and grammar. Also broad in scope - tackles Brazilian usage, too. All-in-all a reliable and accessible little book to pop in your pocket or handbag.
